#FirstFriday: June Exhibitions We Love

Highlighting exhibitions that feature the work of WSW artists, we share the shows, near and far, that make up our monthly must-see list.

New this Month:

Emily Lambert (Studio Intern, ’94) is showing work in Verge, a group show that brings together artists working on the edge of representation and abstraction, at Munch Gallery, NYC. Reception Saturday, June 7th from 4-6pm. Show runs June 7 – July 6.

Darina Peeva (Studio Resident,’13) and Kathy Aoki (Production Grant, ’97) are included included in NEW PRINTS 2014/Summer at the International Print Center New York. Show runs May 30 – July 1 at IPCNY, and will then move to Christie’s showrooms in midtown Manhattan July 9 -July 16.

Diane Jacobs (Artist’s Book Resident, ’00, SAI instructor) is showing Tea Party in PAPER, an exhibition of artwork on, of, or about paper at Waterstone Gallery, Portland, OR. Show runs June 3 – June 29. Artists’ Talk, Sunday, June 15th, 11am.

Diane‘s clever WSW-produced artist’s book Alphabet Tricks is featured in Ink This! Contemporary Print Arts in the Northwest at the Tacoma Art Museum. Show runs June 7 – November 9. Reception June 21, 2-4pm.

Additionally, Diane‘s book Nourish will be on display in the 15th Pacific Center for Book Arts‘s Member’s Show: BookWorks 2014 at the San Francisco Public Library. Show runs June 21 – September 6. Reception June 21, 2-4pm.

DM Witman (Workspace Resident, ’12) is showing several of her dreamy, large format pinhole photographs from her Ways of Being series in Summer Group Show at Asymmetrick Arts, Rockland, ME. Show runs June 6 – 27. Reception June 6, 5-8pm.

Tasja Keetman (Studio Resident, ’09) is showing new pieces from the series huang henyse hymns, and longitude in the solo show do what you love at the Interconti Hotel in Berchtesgaden, Germany. Reception June 21, 5-7pm.

Tyanna Buie (Studio Resident, ’12, SAI instructor) shows new painterly, collaged monoprints at the solo show “Playing Favorites” at Dean Jensen Gallery, Milwaukee, WI. Hurry–show closes June 14!

R&F Handmade Paints in Kingston, NY is holding their annual staff exhibition No Constraints: The R&F Staff Show. The show features work by WSW alumnae Stephanie Bell (Summer & Studio Intern, ’11), Laura Moriarty (Workspace Resident, ’98, ’07, ’08), and Cynthia Winika (Artist’s Book Resident, ’01 & SAI instructor). Hurry–show closes June 14!

Mariona Barkus (Artist’s Book Resident, ’86) is showing her “Illustrated History” project in Enriching & Engaging — Selected Recent Acquisitions at the Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach, CA. Hurry–show closes June 15!

Merike van Zanten  (Workspace Resident, ’14) is showing a book made recently at WSW in the group show Artist’s Book Cornucopia V at Abecedarian Gallery, Denver, CO. Hurry–show closes June 16!

Tatana Kellner (WSW Co-founder and Artistic Director) is showing her newest drawings and collages in Abstraction Unbound at PS 209 Art Gallery, Stone Ridge, NY. Opening reception May 17, 5-7pm. Hurry–show closes June 22!

Merike Van Zanten also has a book made during her residency at WSW in the group show Intimate Works on Paper  at Intima Gallery, Saugerties, NY. Reception June 6,  5-8pm. Hurry–show closes June 22!

Kris Sader (SAI instructor) is featured in the group show Earth-Art-Maine: in the Presence of Wildness, an exhibition of artists responding to their environments, at Common Street Arts, Waterville, ME. Hurry–show closes June 28!

Dahlia Elsayed (Geraldine R. Dodge Resident, ’04) is showing work created during her time as a Workspace Resident at Center for Book Arts in their 2013 Workspace Artists-in-Residence group show at CBA, New York City. Hurry–show closes June 28!

Emily Lambert is also included in the group show Big, Fat & Juicy, a group show of large-scale abstraction that pushes the boundaries of the physicality of paint, at the Pelham Art Center, Pelham, NY. Hurry–show closes June 28!

Lorrie Fredette (Workspace Resident, ’10) is showing her waxed, pod-like sculptural forms alongside Sarah Amos at Cynthia Reeves,  Battleboro, VT. Hurry–show closes June 30!

Ongoing Shows:

Barbara Beisinghoff (Artist’s Book Resident ’09) is having her largest exhibition to date, showing in Das Gesetz des Sterns und die Formel der Blume (The Law of the Star and the Formula of the Flower) at  Museum Bad Arolsen in Hessel, Germany. Show runs May 16 – July 27.

Lorrie Fredette and Laura Moriarty are both featured in the group show Swept Away: Translucence, Transparence, Transcendence in Contemporary Encaustic at the Hunderton Art Museum, Clinton, NJ. Show runs May 18 – September 7.
