#FirstFriday: November Exhibitions We Love

Highlighting exhibitions that feature the work of WSW artists, we share the shows, near and far, that make up our monthly must-see list.

Anne-Marie Lavigne launched Tachi Tachi, a line of color-changing textiles, as part of her residency at the Textile Arts Center.

New York

Zarina Hashmi (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’91) is showing work in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition Workshop and Legacy alongside Stanley William Hayter and Krishna Reddy. Show runs through March 26, 2017.

Tatana Kellner (WSW Artistic Director and Co-founder) is showing work in the group exhibition Transformational Imagemaking: Handmade Photography Since 1960 at the Bevier Gallery, Rochester, NY. Hurry—show closes November 6!

Phyllis Kudder Sullivan (Studio Workspace resident, ’12) is showing work in the group exhibition Hot Pots at the Clay Art Center, Port Chester, NY. Hurry—show closes November 10!

Jennifer Grimyser (Studio Workspace resident ’07, Artist’s Book Grant resident ‘08) is showing in the group exhibition Work: Reflections on Failure at the Radiator Gallery, Long Island City, NY. Hurry—show closes November 12!

Linda Montano (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’83) is showing her book The Art / Life Institute Handbook, published by WSW, at the Center for Book Arts’ Enacting the Text, along with WSW alumna Pat Oleszko (Public Art Grant resident ’14). Show closes December 17, 2016.

Fay Ku (Studio Grant resident ’11) is showing work in the group show Murder She Wrote in the Anya and Andrew Shiva Gallery at John Jay College, NYC. Show runs November 23 – January 13, 2017.

Anne-Marie Lavigne (Legacy Studio Grant resident ’16) launched a collaborative project, Tachi Tachi, with artist Hannah Shultz during their residencies at the Textile Arts Center. Tachi Tachi is a line of bold, screen-printed textiles that change color when exposed to specific triggers: light, water, or heat. Find more about the project here.

Cheyenne Mallo (Studio intern ’11) and Rachel Dubicki (Chili Bowl Workspace resident ’16) are participating in the Garrison Art Center’s Annual Holiday Pottery Sale, Garrison, NY. The sale runs from November 18 – 27, find more information here.

Cara Lynch (Studio Workspace resident ’14) is showing work in a solo exhibition Love Tokens and Talismans at Local Project, Long Island City, NY. Show runs November 17 – December 1, 2016; opening reception November 17, 6 – 8 pm.

Golnar Adili (Legacy Studio Grant resident ’15) and Sonya Blesofsky (Malmö Student resident ’16) are showing work in Smack Mellon‘s 20th Anniversary Exhibition along with friend of WSW Donna Sharrett. Show runs November 12 – December 23, 2016; opening reception November 12, 6 – 9 pm.

Northeast 

Fay Ku (Studio Grant resident ’11) is showing work in the group exhibition I Found God in Myself: the 40th Anniversary of Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girl at the African American Museum in Philadelphia, PA. Show runs through January 2, 2017.

Eva Mantell (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’96) is showing work in the group exhibition Overflow at the Paul Mellon Arts Center, Choate Rosemary Hall School, Wallingford, CT. Show runs through December 18; opening reception November 4, 5:30 – 7 pm.

Eva Mantell (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’96) is showing work with the Princeton Artists Alliance in the exhibition The Politics of Water at the Bernstein Gallery, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ. Show runs through December 9, 2016; opening reception and panel discussion November 9, 4:30 pm.

Amanda Thackray (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’09) is showing work in the group exhibition Accumulating Experience at the 75 Market Street Gallery, Newark, NJ. Hurry—show closes November 11!

Amanda Thackray (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’09) is showing work in the group show Queen of Angels: When a Church Dies at 270 Central Ave, Newark, NJ. Participating artists were given artifacts from the recently demolished Queen of Angels church. Show runs through February 14, 2017.

Carson Fox (Studio Grant resident ’00) is showing work in the group exhibition Anguish: The Grave Misgiving of Remembrance, curated by fellow WSW alumna Cynthia Nourse Thompson (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’03), at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art, Portland, Maine. Show runs through January 14, 2017.

Marianne Dages (Beisinghoff Printmaking resident ’16) is showing work in the group exhibition Celestial/Terrestrial at the Print Center, Philadelphia, PA. Show runs through November 19, 2016.

Messiah College is hosting the exhibition Drawing a Line: Curated Artists’ Books from WSW at the Aughinbaugh Gallery, Mechanicsburg PA. Show runs through December 1, 2016; opening reception November 11, 4:15 pm.

Catherine Nelson (Studio Workspace resident ’16) has three monoprints made during her WSW residency featured in the pop-up exhibition Outbound at MOTO Design Shop, Philadelphia, PA. Hurry—show runs from November 4, 5 pm – November 5, 5 pm!

Midwest

Mary Gordon (Summer intern ’14, Studio intern ’16) and Rachel Kauff (Studio intern ’12) showing work in the Tallgrass Artist Residency Exhibition at the Bank Art Space in Matfield Green, KS. Show closes November 20, 2016.

Britny Wainwright (Ceramics intern ’13) is showing work in the group exhibition Colloquy at the Shot Tower Gallery, Columbus, OH. Colloquy, curated by WSW alumna Carolyn Baginski (Studio intern ‘08), features work of graduate students and faculty from Ohio University and Ohio State University, two of Ohio’s top ranked ceramics programs. Show runs November 7 – December 16, 2016; opening reception November 18, 6 – 8 pm.

South 

Erin Woodbrey (Studio intern ’07) is showing work in the group exhibition Beneath Metropolis at the Blue Star Contemporary, San Antonio, TX. Show runs November 4, 2016 – January 8, 2017.

West 

DM Witman (Studio Workspace resident ’12) is showing work in Hot Topic, an exhibit responding to climate change through photography, at Gallery 1/1 in Seattle, WA. Hurry—show closes November 5!

Diane Jacobs (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’00) is showing in 4th Anniversary Group Show – SLOW at Oranj Studio, Portland, OR. Show runs through December 31, 2016.

Carson Fox (Studio Grant resident ’00) is showing work at the Fowler Museum at UCLA, CA. She was one of 36 artists commissioned  to contribute to The Box Project: Uncommon Threads. Show runs through January 15, 2017.

Ellen Sollod (Artist’s Book Grant resident ’90) is showing work in Into the Deep, an exhibition featuring the work of sixteen artists at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA. Over 55 artworks will illustrate the visual similarities between glass and water. Show runs through September, 2017.

Phyllis Kudder Sullivan (Studio Workspace resident, ’12) has a solo exhibition of her Vortex with Gold Line Series at the Lois Lambert Gallery, Santa Monica, CA. Show runs November 19 – January 8, 2017; opening reception November 19, 6 – 9 p.m.

Tia Kramer (Studio Workspace resident ’12) is performing Each Other at MadArt in Seattle, WA on Saturday November 5 from 11 am – 2 pm. Each Other is part of the series of installations We Are a Crowd of Others.

International

Tatiana Klacsmann (Studio Workspace resident ’15) is showing work in the juried exhibition Breaking New Ground, celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of Baldwin Ink Ground at the Aberystwyth School of Art in Wales. Show closes November 18, 2016.

Carly Butler (Parent Grant resident ’15) is showing work in Terroir: A Nova Scotia Survey at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax. Show runs through January 15, 2017.

Yen-Hua Lee (Chili Bowl Workspace resident ’09) is showing work in the exhibition Kaetemiru: Time for a Change at the Aomori Contemporary Art Center, Aomori, Japan. Show runs through December 11, 2016.

Erin Woodbrey (Studio intern ’07) is showing work in a solo exhibition Material Studies at the Arena Gallery, Liverpool, UK. Hurry—show closes November 12!
