New Faces at WSW: Fall 2017 Edition

Get to know the Workshop’s newest talents—our interns!

When Serena and Morgan aren’t busy keeping WSW caffeinated, they’ll be jogging between studios aiding artists-in-residence, helping out with our Summer Art Institute, and later working with high school students in our Art-in-Ed classes. Sara, meanwhile, can typically be found either cooking glamorous meals for our SAI participants, or up on the hill keeping our ArtFarm alive and well. If you stop by our brand new office, you’ll probably see El reviving her desk plant, responding to phone and email inquiries, and managing several marketing projects at once.

Together, they intend to continue making books, as well as other artworks, and travel to see various exhibitions throughout the Northeast. Read our exclusive interviews with them below!

Sara Quinn

Internship: Summer Intern
School(s): B.A. from Wesleyan University, 2011
Major(s)/Minor(s): American Studies and a lot of art

Where’s your hometown (or place you call home)?
I’m from Atlanta but have been living in New Orleans for 5+ years teaching in public schools and eating obscene amounts of crawfish.

Who are your top three favorite artists?
I go back to Louise Bourgeois and Maurice Sendak over and over and over again. And right now I am out of my mind obsessed with Belkis Ayon, the Cuban printmaker.

What art-making supplies did you bring with you to WSW? Things to draw with and things to make books with. My main treasures are my beautiful vintage bone folder, COLORED PENCILS, binding thread I dyed with indigo and other plants, and a tiny little bag of gold powder from Mexico city. Really not sure how to use that yet.

What music do you like listening to while you work? At Penland last month I watched the entire 3 seasons of The Leftovers while I was working. Lately though it’s reggae and Selena Gomez…

What are you most excited for at WSW?
Learning new things from amazing people, especially those with more life experience than me.
Creating books and posters in the beautiful studios.
Gathering all the delicious wild and cultivated plants that grow like crazy around here and making potions to share. So far I’ve made elderberry syrup, rhubarb jam, and fermented Louisiana-style hot sauce.

What’s your dream job? Two dream jobs:
1. Author and illustrator and publisher of children’s books that help all different kids navigate and create a world that is more tender, more just, and more beautiful.
2. I want to be a part of a school that serves marginalized kids and their families with leadership and vision from their communities and experienced, brilliant, and valued educators. In this school, kids would be equipped with the skills they need to live the lives they dream for themselves while making art, exploring the natural world, and living in a true, messy, and interdependent community.

El Horsfall

Internship: Nonprofit Management Intern
School(s): Whitman College
Major(s)/Minor(s): Studio Art/Politics

Where’s your hometown (or place you call home)?
I’m from Redmond, WA (near Seattle), but Whitman and Walla Walla, WA ended up feeling like another home to me.

Who are your top three favorite artists?
Marilyn MinterPipilotti Rist, Jennifer Phang

What art-making supplies did you bring with you to WSW?
1. Camera
2. Graphics tablet
3. Markers
(videos and books coming soon)

What music do you like listening to while you work? Any and all female-vocalized jams.

What are you most excited for at WSW? Having the opportunity to make and discuss art with so many inspiring and powerful artists. I’ve already learned so much and I can’t wait to learn more!

What’s your dream job? I truly hope to start a collective of subversive horror filmmakers one day.

Morgan Allen

Internship: Studio Intern
School: St. Ambrose University
Major(s)/Minors(s): Book Arts and Art History

Where’s your hometown (or place you call home)?
Quad Cities, Iowa

Who are your top three favorite artists?
Artemisia Gentileschi, Jean Honoré Fragonard,
Dawn Wohlford

What art-making supplies did you bring with you to WSW? I actually forgot all of my supplies because I was focused on making sure I had my portfolio.

What music do you like listening to while you work? Alternative and Opera.

What are you most excited for at WSW Learning new things from the people I am working with.

What’s your dream job? Something that I can love doing.

Serena Hocharoen

Internship: Studio Intern
School(s): Grinnell College
Major(s)/Minor(s): B.A. in Studio Art and Chemistry

Where’s your hometown (or place you call home)?
The Midwest. I grew up in Skokie, Illinois and have spent some time living in Grinnell, Iowa and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Who are your top three favorite artists?
Lee Kit, Yoko Ono, Suellen Rocca

What art-making supplies did you bring with you to WSW? I brought far too many handmade papers from previous projects as well as from Cave Paper, where I did an internship last summer. Along with that, I’ve got vinyl scraps in fun colors, metal leaf, sewing materials, and pens.

What music do you like listening to while you work? It depends on my mood, but my go-tos are usually Arca, Radiator Hospital, Solange, and Pile.

What are you most excited for at WSW? My school didn’t have letterpress or etching, so I’m excited to try out those processes, along with different fibers for papermaking and maybe using the darkroom to develop photos. I’m also excited for a bunch of the SAI courses being taught this summer and to meet the instructors and other artists. I also want to get back to making ceramics and am going to try more complicated screen print designs.

What’s your dream job? I have no idea, but I want to continue making things and working with my hands, hopefully collaborating with other artists. A few of my other dreams include: work at a small press, own/have access to a laser engraver, and have enough money to live comfortably.
