Artists' Books
The genre of artists' books has been a focus of our grants program since 1979. Artists' books are a way of creating a visual/textual piece that incorporates all traditional aspects of books in an artform that uniquely communicates the message of our artists. Viewing an artists' book is an intimate experience, whether the form is collaged with handmade papers and photographs, or thoughtfully printed on the letterpress and silkscreened. Our continued dedication to the field has made Women's Studio Workshop the largest publisher of hand printed artists' books in the country. Artists have produced over 160 artists' books and portfolios, with the use of our studios and technical expertise. WSW has artists' books in collections world-wide and six institutions are repositories of all the artists' books published by WSW. The repositories are: Indiana University (Bloomington), Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Delaware, Vassar College, Virginia Commonwealth University and Yale University.

These books, chosen through a juried international competition, reflect the wide range of subject matter, cultural diversity, and aesthetic perspectives of the artists who come to work in our studios. WSW's artists' books are characterized by the combination of media available at WSW and may incorporate handmade paper, letterpress, silkscreen, photography, intaglio, or ceramics.

How an Artists' Book Gets Published
The artists' books we publish do not easily fit into any one category.
This is due in part to our selection process. In the spirit of open participation to all, we invite artists interested in producing a book to submit a proposal. All submitted books are considered, and the selection is made by a rotating jury of practicing book artists. The jury changes annually, and always includes at least one artist who has previously been awarded a WSW Artist-In-Residence Grant. An open and fair selection process continues to be the most vital element in implementing our book arts grants. This democratic process has resulted in a wonderful and varied collection.

Some artists work at WSW for up to six weeks creating a limited edition artists' book, while others produce editions in their home studios. We would like to congratulate all the artists who have worked with us over the years, producing some of the most original and exciting books in the field.
