italy printmaking workshop

This summer the Tuscan Workshop will be held at Antica Tenuta Le Casacce. Our Italian Workshop coordinator, Susan Fateh has selected this exquisite new site because it features breathtaking views whichever way you look,  ample and well lit indoor work-space opening out onto a private terrace, pleasant, charming bedrooms, and  sublime food prepared by a top Roman chef.

This panoramic location about 3 km from the medieval village of Seggiano, is an ideal place for experiencing fine Italian cuisine in an evocatively authentic Tuscan setting. Dating back to the 13th Century, the villa's recent renovations have rendered it comfortable without losing traditional character and it basks in unspoiled countryside full of native flora and fauna. Students may opt for private rooms or double occupancy and partners and friends are welcome at a 20% discount.

Immerse yourself in art-making with seasoned printmaker and gifted teacher Susan Amons. The class will focus on monoprinting incorporating the highly refined techniques Susan has developed over years of printing. A day trip to nearby Siena is included.

Serial Monoprinting
Instructor BioSusan Amons

Study printmaking in the Tuscan landscape, surrounded by abundant light, architecture, and antiquities to inspire your work. This nine day printmaking workshop, lead by extraordinary colorist and printmaker Susan Amons, will focus of the myriad image making possibilities of monoprint.

Students will create dynamic layers of color as they build monoprint images by combining a variety of techniques, such as direct mark making, layering color with brayers, and cutting and inking moveable shapes to create colorful, complex prints. We’ll incorporate drypoint lines on aluminum and mylar and add chine colle papers for color and weight.  Color mixing will be emphasized.  Multiple passes of the plate will enrich surface tone and texture. Participants will be encouraged to pursue diptychs, triptychs, and multiple plate pieces using these processes.

"Susan Amons regularly prints mural sized atmospheric monoprints at WSW. She has refined her technique using mylar intaglio plates that create sophisticated images that go far beyond the basic monoprint. Her work is informed by her environment as well as her extensive experience with the media."
