2008 Papermaking Classes
Sculptural Papermaking
Instructor BioEllen Kucera Instructor BioChris Petrone

Create sculpture from the inside out starting with elegant armatures covered with skin-like paper. This workshop will focus on various armature making techniques and methods for covering those forms with handmade paper. Using basic materials such as chicken wire, twine and found sticks, students will learn basket weaving techniques to create armatures. More complex structures will be constructed using basic welding skills. Papermaking demonstrations will focus on the sculptural use of abaca and flax paper. There will be plenty of pulp on hand to experiment with various methods of covering armatures.

Pulp Painting: Beyond the Squeeze Bottle
Instructor BioShannon Brock
This one week workshop combines 2-D image making and 3-D sculptural papermaking.  We begin the week with pulp painting, using multiple moulds and vats of pigmented pulp, along with contact paper, dental syringes, and paint brushes.  Participants will learn pulp painting techniques and develop images by layering and overlapping thin veils of pulp.  In the sculptural portion of the class, students will use high shrinkage abaca along with nylon stocking armatures to form small sculptural objects.  While the form is wet we will create images, using the various pulp painting techniques learned earlier in the week.  Once the piece has dried, the armature is removed leaving you with a beautiful pulp painted hollow seamless paper form.  Basic sheet forming, pigmenting and armature building will be reviewed.

Cross Pollination: Papermaking and Encaustic
Instructor BioChris Petrone Instructor BioLaura Moriarty

Join WSW in collaboration with R&F Handmade Paints as we create contemporary waxed handmade paper works. The first two days of this class will be held at WSW in the papermaking studio, where students will work with cotton, abaca and flax fibers. Once the basics are mastered, we’ll investigate the potential of hand papermaking. We will create collages utilizing techniques of layering, imbedding, translucency and opacity, stenciling, pulp painting, and embossing.

Using these handmade paper elements as starting points, we will spend the last two days at R&F Handmade Paints in nearby Kingston for a wax-travaganza. This session will begin with an introduction to basic encaustic techniques. Then students will create deeply layered collages by working directly on the handmade papers or mounting the handmade sheets on panels. We will be saturating, bending, burnishing, dipping, staining, transferring, drawing, and carving into this natural wonder.

Introduction to Asian Papermaking

Instructor Bio Kate Carr
This workshop will introduce participants to the wonderful world of Asian hand-papermaking. Asian papermaking is an ancient craft, which is extremely adaptable and can be easily done without high-tech studio equipment. To begin the week we will briefly cover the history, materials, and methods of Asian papermaking, drawing primarily on Japanese and Nepalese techniques. Participants will then build their own basic wooden molds which will be used to make paper for the rest of the week. We will be using kozo the most commonly used fiber in Japanese papermaking. Participants will learn each step of the traditional handpapermaking process, including how to prepare their own fiber by cooking it, picking and beating the fiber by hand, and making their own sheets of paper. Handmade paper is suited to a wide variety of artistic practices such as drawing, collage, printmaking, bookbinding, and sculpture. Throughout the workshop Kate will reference a range of artists working with handmade paper to inspire ways to use this unique material.

Western Papermaking; Cotton, Flax Abaca and Non-Traditional Fibers

Instructor BioEugenie Barron
Each papermaking fiber has its own personality. Cotton makes solid reliable sheets that are excellent for printmaking and embossing. Flax or linen can be translucent, have a snappy surface and shrinks when it dries making it perfect for stretching over forms. Abaca is a versatile fiber and has the capacity for adapting to either western or eastern sheet forming techniques. All of these fibers can be enhanced by adding non-traditional fibers to activate the surface, color, or texture of the sheets. In this class we will work with all of the traditional fibers and some of the more than 100 fibers WSW has been testing for the past several years. We will experiment with various ways to beat the fibers, practice sheet forming, multiple couching and laminating as students will learn how to use paper as an art making media in it own right.
